Educational Series: Type 2 Diabetes Prevention

Are you at risk for Type 2 Diabetes? Or have been told by a physician that you are pre-diabetic? If so, join Carilion Clinic and the Franklin County Library in a free 6-week Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Educational program.

The program features discussions led by Carilion Clinic Community Health Educator and R.N., Gail Nordhaus, a library loaned guidebook, wellness coaching, nutrition & exercise tips, recipes and more!

Attending all sessions is strongly encouraged!

A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls

Ground level fall related injuries are increasing every year. In 2015, trauma admissions for these injuries surpassed all other reason for traumatic admissions for the first time.  With this knowledge, the fear of falling is growing.  A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls is an evidence based program that takes a multi-faceted approach to fall prevention. This program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls.

Participants will learn to:
· View falls as controllable
· Set goals for increasing activity
· Make changes to reduce fall risks at home
· Exercise to increase strength and balance.
 
Program Overview:
· 8-week workshop
· 2 hours each week
· Sessions lead by certified coaches who have personal experience in dealing with falling

** After completing A Matter of Balance, participants are more comfortable
   talking about their fear of falling, feel comfortable increasing activity, plan
   to continue exercising, and would recommend the program.

Ladies Night Out: Fitness Dance Party

Please come and join Carilion Clinic registered dietician, Ann Neussendorfer, to learn more about how to navigate the grocery isles to support healthier eating. 

Participants MUST be 18 years of age and/or older to register/participate.  Participants should bring a pen and pad to write on and wear comfortable shoes for walking.

Cholesterol Screening - Heart Health at the Waldron Wellness Center

Join us as we celebrate Heart Health month at the Waldron Wellness Center. This event raises awareness about the dangers of heart disease and the steps you can take to reduce your risks. We are encouraging you to participate as we promote awareness of the risks of heart disease.

  • Smoking cessation education
  • Stroke awareness information
  • Exercise and fitness tips

Come join us and learn how to prepare quick, healthy meals that won't break the bank or your back.  We will discuss nutrient needs as we age, quick meals and tips on how to buy and prepare foods that are budget friendly.  You will leave with printed materials including recipes to try at home and a healthy snacks to enjoy during the talk.

Bridge to Caring Hands - Caregiver 101 Training

Caregiver Training 101 aims to help individuals care for their loved one at home by providing FREE education on basic caregiver skills.
