Paddle Sports Safety

As spring and summer arrive, many people increase their outdoor activity especially involvement with moving water. Join us to learn about water hazards and how to enjoy the great outdoors while staying safe.

Kayaks, canoes, and SUPs are not provided and attendees are encouraged NOT to bring their own. The Paddle Sports Safety class focuses on personal safety after entering moving water without a watercraft.

You will learn to:

•    Prepare for a river trip.
•    Manage personal safety and personal protective equipment.
•    Manage basic self-rescue techniques.
•    Identify and respond to moving water hazards such as strainers, sieves, and hydrolytics.

Who should attend?

•    Everyone who kayaks, canoes, or SUPs.
•    Everyone who is interested in spending time on rivers or creeks.
•    Everyone who enjoys going on commercial rafting trips.

 Prerequisite:

•    Closed toed shoes must be worn.
•    Wear clothes that can get wet in the river.

Carilion's New "Spirit of U" Women's Health Series

How resilient are you?
Join us for lunch on May 25th to learn how you can become more physically and emotionally resilient.  Carilion Clinic psychiatrist Thomas R. Milam, M.D., and Jefferson College of Health Sciences assistant professor Glenn Kent, Ph.D., will explore the important steps you can take to maintain your emotional and physical well-being.
Representatives from Carilion's breast care center, home health and hospice teams, audiology, physical therapy, and from the Central and Western Virginia Alzheimer's Association will be on hand to answer your questions.

Admission: $15 (includes lunch)

Prevent Type 2 Diabetes: Read to Wellness

Are you at risk for type 2 diabetes? Or maybe you have been told by a physician that you are pre-diabetic? If you answered YES to the above, plan to attend the Type 2 Diabetes four - week program. The diabetes prevention program includes a library issued study guidebook on diabetes prevention, wellness coach support, optional nutrition and exercise opportunities, and more!

This program is free and registration is required.  You may register for the program by calling the Franklin County Library at (540) 483-3098.

Healthy Resources:

The Everything Guide to Managing and Reversing Pre-Diabetes by Gretchen Scalpi, RD, CDN, CDE will be one of the resources used during this program. This book can be checked out at the library. Carilion Clinic Community Outreach Coordinator, Gail Nordhaus, and other health enthusiasts will help lead those in the club to find healthy habits and live more active lifestyles.
