Are you living your most optimal life? Join us to learn how to use your health and wellness habits and the foods you eat to your advantage.  Whether you want to reduce your risk of Cancer, Heart disease, Diabetes and even Alzheimer's and/or just maintain a healthy weight, this event is for you!

Come and join us this year as Carilion Clinic's Clinical Dietitian, Angela Charlton, R.D., shares her extensive knowledge as a registered dietitian and nutritionist of how to learn to use good nutrition and regular exercise to reduce your risk of Cancer, Heart disease, etc.

What You Need To Know About Stroke

Do you know the warning signs of a Stroke? Do you know what to do when a Stroke happens? When a Stroke happens, Minutes matter!

A Stroke is a sudden problem that affects the blood vessels of the brain and occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, also often called "a brain attack".  "When a Stroke occurs, brain cells in the immediate area begin to die because they stop getting the oxygen and nutrients they need in order to function".  You could be at risk for a Stroke if you are 50 years of age and/or older and you have one or more of the following risk factors:

  • High Blood Pressure;
  • Diabetes;
  • Cardiovascular Disease;
  • A Family history of any of these factors and/or
  • You are a smoker.

Are you at risk for Type 2 Diabetes? Or maybe you have been told by a Physician that you are Pre-Diabetic?

If you answered 'yes' to the above questions, please plan to attend the Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Book Club Kick-Off event where you can learn more about this program.  "Read to Wellness" is a different type of book club, where members read from one resource book, instead of from several books.  The Diabetes Prevention Program includes a library issued study guidebook on Diabetes Prevention, Wellness coach support, Optional nutrition, Exercise opportunities and much more!

Carilion Clinic is partnering with Franklin County Parks & Recreation and Virginia Tech to present four (4) classes on "Balanced Living with Diabetes", along with some great recipes to taste. During these meetings, topics such as:

  • Learning to live with Diabetes

  • Healthy Eating practices/tips and

  • Exercising/Maintaining a Healthy weight, will be discussed and more!

Diverticulitis: Knowing a Common Digestive Disorder

As you age, you may experience changes in your digestive tract, developing inflammation that can cause belly pain, bloating or trouble in the bathroom. These changes can be symptoms of a common digestive disorder called diverticulitis.

Join Carilion Clinic gastroenterologist Anand Kishore, M.D., to understand your risks and symptoms and to learn about available treatments and preventive lifestyle changes you can make.
