The human brain is responsible for your every thought, emotion, and behavior, including your memory. As we age, a decline in memory is normal but we can make simple lifestyle changes to not only improve memory but also keep it sharp longer.

Brian Unwin, M.D., chief of geriatric and palliative medicine at the Carilion Clinic Center for Healthy Aging, will be speaking at a free event about memory-loss diseases, healthy aging, and what you can do to help put your mind at ease.

Laugh coach Susan Cranson will lead a fun-filled walk on the Jack-O-Lantern Trail.  This is no joke... she's a laugh coach with great ideas for keeping us happy and healthy. You might just feel like skipping on this walk!

Carilion Clinic Community Herb and Vegetable Garden Planting

Come and join us for a hands-on and get dirty planting on May 16th, supported with on going management, harvesting, and cooking of the herbs and vegetables as they're ready.  We will be providing a short presentation on the garden plans and health benefits of the vegetation we will be working with.  Then we'll play in the dirt.

We are located at the Carilion Clinic Westlake Clinic, 35 Medical Court, Hardy, Va located behind  Kroger. This event is free.  Children and adults of all ages are invited. Rain Date is: Sunday May 17th. Call Carilion Clinic to pre-register at 540-265-6000.

Aspects of a Healthy Heart

Cancer, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes are the four most common types of diseases that result from lifestyle-related (or non-communicable) behaviors.  These are the most common conditions that we suffer from due to unhealthy living. In other words by living unhealthy lifestyles, we can actually damage an otherwise healthy immune system which in turn may potentially cause more harm than good!  You may be thinking that lifestyle-related diseases are not likely to affect you, and hopefully you are right.


The good news is that the above lifestyle-related diseases can almost always be avoided by simply eating a nutritious diet, getting regular exercise, not smoking and drinking in moderation. Well this is true most of the time; however, our health can also be damaged by living in unhealthy or polluted environments.
