What is Pink Ribbon Challenge?

During Breast Health Awareness Month in October, we will be scheduling wellness opportunities throughout the entire month.  Pre-registered participants can choose from several different activities that promote health and wellness, such as: 

  • Using a free pass to the YMCA;
  • Scheduled walking events;
  • Health themed movie's at the Library;
  • Suggested health readings;
  • Getting your Mammogram scheduled, etc.

Participants will be given a tracking calendar, as well.  At the end of October, participants who have completed at least four (4) different scheduled activities will qualify to win a Kendall reader.

Prevent Type 2 Diabetes / Read To Wellness

Are you at risk for type 2 Diabetes? Or maybe you've been told by a physician that you are Pre-Diabetic? If you answered yes, please plan to attend the four (4) week Type 2 Diabetes Prevention program from October 6 - November 3, 2016.

The Diabetes Prevention program includes a library issued study guidebook on Diabetes prevention, wellness coach support, optional nutrition and exercise opportunities and more! Read To Wellness is a different type of book club, where members read from one resource book, instead of from several books. 

The kick-off event will be held on Thursday, October 6th in Rocky Mount!  Pre - Registration is required.  You MUST register by Monday, October 3rd.  To register, please call Carilion Clinic Direct at (540) 266-6000 and/or Toll-Free at (800) 422-8482.  Participants must have a valid Franklin County Library card in order to be loaned the study guide.  Library card can be obtained on the evening of the first (1st) class.

* Healthy Resources:
               The Everything Guide to Managing and Reversing Pre-Diabetes by Gretchen Scalpi, RD, CDN, CDE will be one of
               the resources used during this program.  This book can be checked out at the library.  Carilion Clinic Community
              Outreach Coordinator, Gail Nordhaus and other health enthusiasts will help lead those in the club to find healthy
              habits and live more active lifestyles.

History Walk and Picnic

Come and enjoy this free and easy guided hike in Waid Park (Franklin County) with stops along the trail to reveal the local history of the area.  Pack your lunch box to enjoy a group lunch at one of the park's shaded community picnic sites.

Make sure yours is not one of them by attending a car seat safety check today! Come have your car seat checked by a Certified Technician to ensure the safety of your child.

Let's Build Healthy Kids

An activity for kids to learn about Heart, Lungs, Hair, Ears, Vision, Stomach and Teeth.  Activities and Build a cut out person will help children learn about these body parts and how to keep them healthy!

This event is for children ages 6 - 12 and is limited to (20) children, not including adults.

Body Basics

Body Basics is a beginner level strengthening training session for adults.  An exercise class for individuals new to exercise who need guidance or who have a health related physical limitation to work around. These strength training classes involves standing and sitting exercises. We use hand weights and participants can stand and/or sit to perform theses exercises.
 
Weights are provided.
