Trail Fitness Basics

Join Carilion Clinic's fitness instructor for a walk along Philpott Lake's scenic trail.  The walk will include stops along the way at fitness stations located throughout the trail - demonstrations of using the trail fitness stations will be provided.

Requirements for this Event: Participants MUST be able to walk on a moderate intensity trail.  Individuals must be able to walk trails rated moderate due to the hilly terrain at Philpott Lake.  The group will stop at fitness stations along the trail for instructions and demo.

Good Groceries/Good Health: Grocery Store Tour

Grocery shopping can be overwhelming and confusing, making it hard to know what to put in your basket - BUT, it doesn't have to be!

If you have pre-diabetes and/or just want to improve your diet, a Grocery Store Tour is a great way to learn how to make healthy food choices for your specific needs.  

On Wednesday, March 30, 2016, you can join a Carilion Clinic Health Educator for a 1 to 2 hour walking tour of the Rocky Mount Kroger.  Topics covered during the tour will include:

  • What to look for in each area of the store
  • How to read a food label
  • Better food choices
  • Serving sizes and how food affects glucose levels
  • A time to ask food-related and other specific questions

Diabetic Prevention Book Club Kick-Off!

Are you at risk for Type 2 Diabetes? Or maybe you have been told by a Physician that you are Pre-Diabetic?

If you answered 'yes' to the above questions, please plan to attend the Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Book Club Kick-Off event where you can learn more about this program.  "Read to Wellness" is a different type of book club, where members read from one resource book, instead of from several books.  The Diabetes Prevention Program includes a library issued study guidebook on Diabetes Prevention, Wellness coach support, Optional nutrition, Exercise opportunities and much more!

Carilion Clinic is partnering with Franklin County Parks & Recreation and Virginia Tech to present four (4) classes on "Balanced Living with Diabetes", along with some great recipes to taste. During these meetings, topics such as:

  • Learning to live with Diabetes

  • Healthy Eating practices/tips and

  • Exercising/Maintaining a Healthy weight, will be discussed and more!

Mind Your Memory with Dr. Brian K. Unwin, M.D.

The human brain is responsible for your every thought, emotion and behavior - including your memory.  As we age, a decline in our memory is normal; but, we can make simple lifestyle changes to not only improve memory, but also keep it sharper longer.  At this Free Event, Dr. Brian K. Unwin, M.D., Chief of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Carilion Clinic Center for Healthy Aging, will address tips on what you can do to keep your brain sharp, improve your memory as you age and what you can do to help put your mind at ease.
