Liver Cancer

Carilion Clinic offers expert treatment for cancer of the liver, with access to advanced treatment options including minimally invasive surgery, CyberKnife® radiosurgery, a radiation therapy system that targets tumors with pinpoint accuracy and Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT), a targeted treatment for liver tumors that delivers radiation in the form of tiny radioactive beads directly to the cancer while sparing nearby healthy tissue.

The largest organ in the body, the liver is located under the right ribs, just below the right lung. It is has two lobes and is shaped like a pyramid. Primary liver cancer originates on the surface of or inside the liver, while the term "metastatic liver cancer" describes cancers that begin elsewhere in the body and travel to the liver.

Our cancer treatment program, in collaboration with the physicians of Blue Ridge Cancer Care, provides the full range of liver cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation, on both an in-patient and out-patient basis. We offer IGRT, Image-Guided Radiation Therapy, which combines a new form of imaging technology that allows precise targeting of the tumor with the control of IMRT to pinpoint and treat cancerous tumors with varying amounts of radiation.

We emphasize a multidisciplinary approach to care. Every patient benefits from the collaborative expertise of an experienced team of specialists who meet regularly to discuss each patient's care and progress. Our surgeons, specialists in minimally invasive procedures, have extensive experience treating all types of cancer.

We encourage patients and their loved ones to participate in a wide range of complementary and alternative treatments, including support groups, nutritional counseling, massage and more.
