The Most Beautiful Thing by Cara Ellen Modisett

Every few weeks of my residency, I've proposed a new question to staff, patients and visitors. We've placed boxes in a couple of the waiting rooms and communicated the questions through Carilion email as well. I'll share some of those responses, beginning with the first question:

What is the most beautiful thing you've seen today?

Some responses reflected on nature, a thunderstorm and the much-needed rain.

Notes on beauty in nature.

Others reflected unexpected joy and beauty within the walls of the hospital, from a gift on a windowsill (I'm guessing) to poignant and sometimes heartbreaking moments in the lives of patients and staff.

Notes on compassionate hospital staff.

Many wrote about their families and loved ones.

Notes on beauty between loved ones.

Some of the greatest beauty is not found in "what" but in "who."
