Dr. Whatley’s professional experience spans more than three decades. As a Pulmonary Fellow at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Dr. Whatley furthered his education to address health issues related to the lungs and breathing. Prior to joining Carilion in 2007, he provided care for patients at academic centers in Texas, Utah, and North Carolina. He also served as a professor, teaching new physicians at the University of Utah School of Medicine and the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, where he was later appointed Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Whatley has authored numerous original articles, reviews, book chapters and abstracts for national and regional medical publications. He has also lectured at a variety of national conferences. A Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians, Dr. Whatley has earned clinical recognition through his leadership and research and is a member of the Association of Professors of Medicine. He is a member of the Carilion Clinic Board of Governors and is on the Board of Directors of Carilion Medical Center. He also serves on the board of Carilion Clinic Medicare Resources and co-chairs the Carilion Medical Center Joint Quality Committee.
Dr. Whatley’s strong leadership and professional achievements are only two aspects of his success, however. He is also a dedicated father and husband, having raised two children.
