Dr. Burton joined Carilion in 2010 with a deep commitment to quality patient care, research and the training of southwest Virginia’s next generation of Emergency Medicine physicians. He was previously Director of the Residency Program and Vice Chairman for Academic Affairs for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Albany (N.Y.) Medical College. At Albany, he was selected by residents in Emergency Medicine to receive the 2009 Teacher of the Year Award.
Dr. Burton also has served as Medical Director for the State of Maine Emergency Medical Services, Director of Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Maine Medical Center in Portland and Faculty Member in Emergency Medicine at the University of Vermont. The author or co-author of numerous articles and book chapters, Dr. Burton’s research interests include the area of procedural sedation for emergency department patients.
An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Burton enjoys hiking, mountain climbing and snowboarding.
