Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Program

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD, usually caused by cigarette smoking or long-term exposure to other lung irritants, is a progressive disease that makes it hard to breathe. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are considered COPD.

Carilion’s Virginia COPD program includes:

  • Diagnosis and management of breathing disorders related mostly to cigarette smoking, but also due to other exposures, such as wood stoves
  • Pulmonary Function Testing to include evaluation of the capacity of the lungs to exchange oxygen
  • Evaluation of the response to bronchodilator therapy
  • Assessments for the need of oxygen therapy
