Our Carilion primary care team is a trusted group of over 200 physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, all working together to provide the best possible care for you.
Nurse Practitioners. Our nurse practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses who have received additional advanced education and training to meet most of your healthcare needs, such as diagnosing and managing many common and chronic illnesses. NPs provide patient-centered care, with a focus on health maintenance, disease prevention, counseling, and patient education.
Physician Assistants. Like NPs, our physician assistants (PAs) are trained to take medical histories, conduct exams, and order lab tests under the guidance of a supervising physician. NPs and PAs work in close partnership with doctors to improve quality, efficiency, and access to care in our medical homes.
Depending on your individual healthcare requirements, we refer you to specialists in our own practice (such as an endocrinologist for diabetes or a cardiologist if you have a history of heart disease) as necessary. We also refer you as needed to a variety of other healthcare professionals in our interdisciplinary practice—for example, a dietician to assist you in designing and following a diabetes eating plan; a physical therapist (PT) to help you regain strength and mobility after a knee or hip replacement; a psychologist to give you a hand coping with depression after a heart attack; or a social worker to help you access necessary resources and support in our community.
Our highly integrated healthcare teams at our patient-centered medical homes provide the care you want and need for yourself and your family in the Roanoke Valley.
