At Carilion Clinic Children's Hospital our highly trained and skilled speech-language therapists specialize in treating the full range of speech, language, feeding, fluency, voice and pragmatic disorders associated with children. We work closely with families to address their needs and to incorporate their goals into each child's treatment plan. We are committed to providing outstanding care for children in coordination with other primary care and specialty care providers, schools, daycare centers and community service agencies.

We provide diagnostic and therapeutic services for a variety of speech-language and feeding/swallowing disorders, including:

  • Aphasia (language loss due to brain injury)
  • Apraxia (difficulty sequencing speech sounds)
  • Articulation/phonological disorders (difficulty pronouncing speech sounds)
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Central auditory processing disorders
  • Cognitive linguistic disorders
  • Communication difficulties related to hearing impairment
  • Dysarthria (slow, slurred speech)
  • Feeding aversion and swallowing issues
  • Oral and written language difficulties
  • Oromotor deficits (weak or uncoordinated mouth muscles)
  • Stuttering/fluency disorders
  • Texture difficulties
  • Transitioning to oral feeding
  • Velopharyngeal insufficiency (hypernasal speech)

We commonly perform the following procedures and diagnostic tests:

  • Central auditory processing testing
  • Consultative, diagnostic and direct therapy in oral-motor, feeding and swallowing
  • Modified barium swallow studies for evaluation of swallowing function
  • Evaluation and treatment of resonance disorders
