The Regional Leader in Joint Replacement
If you are considering joint replacement surgery, it makes sense to choose Carilion Clinic over other hospitals. Our Joint Replacement program sets the bar as the regional leader in surgical excellence. We emphasize minimally invasive techniques and innovative approaches, including the anterior approach to hip replacement that reduces recovery time by 50 percent in almost every case.
Carilion's quality ratings are excellent; in particular we have an exceptionally low rate of complications and high patient satisfaction scores. Our inpatient orthopaedic unit has been certified since 2007 by the Joint Commission, and has received its “Gold Seal of Approval” for quality care. Our surgeons are the most experienced by far, performing the vast majority of all joint replacements in western Virginia. We perform nearly 1,500 hip and knee replacement surgeries each year, with an excellent outcome record.
What to Expect?
Our commitment to patient education is unparalleled. Carilion Clinic's Joint Academy program tells you what you can expect every step of the way. The two-hour program provides all the information you need about your pre-operative steps, surgical procedures, hospitalization, and post-surgical needs. We encourage you to bring family members along so that they, too, can know what to expect while participating in your care. Our informative program is team-taught by our inpatient and outpatient care coordinators, familiar faces you will see regularly, both before and after your surgery. They are always available to answer questions and address concerns to put you at ease throughout the process.
Advanced Surgical Techniques
We know you want to reduce your pain and feel better. We also know you are anxious to get home and return to your normal activities as quickly as possible. That’s why our orthopaedic surgeons specialize in performing the most sophisticated computer-assisted techniques. By taking a minimally invasive approach to procedures, we can offer you the best of both worlds – an excellent outcome with quicker recovery.
When it comes to hip joint replacement, all of Carilion surgeons utilize anterior approach, the most successful and least invasive method in practice. Benefits of this method include:
- Smaller incisions with precise instrumentation causes less physical trauma
- Hip joint access is created between muscles, eliminating the need to detach and reattach the muscles
- Post-operative discomfort is reduced, less healing time is needed, and rehabilitation can begin earlier
Extraordinary Quality Indicators
Your safety is a top priority. We urge you to tell us about any fears or concerns you have regarding other medical conditions, your medications, or how this surgery and recovery period will affect your life. We’re proud to be able to say that our infection rate is less than 1 percent -- we work hard to insure your best health throughout your stay. Carilion Clinic care coordinators are available to help you understand and make arrangements for the supports you will need during your recovery period. While every patient’s needs vary, we’re happy to arrange for in-home healthcare services to help with everything from bathing and getting in and out of bed to making grocery runs or getting to your follow-up appointments.
If you’re unable to return home immediately after your surgery, Carilion can help to make arrangements for you to recover at a skilled nursing facility or rehabilitation center. We are proud to have long-standing relationships with centers all over Virginia, many of which offer designated total joint recovery units, featuring specialized physical therapy and occupational therapy resources.
Once you are settled into your care facility, or your home, Carilion's outpatient care coordinator will continue to stay in touch, making sure you are comfortable and at ease as you begin working your way through rehabilitation and back to normal activities.
