Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe and painless diagnostic tool that uses the energy of high-frequency sound waves to produce images of your blood vessels, organs and tissues. With varying density different parts of your body reflect, absorb and refract these waves differently; Carilion collects their "echoes" and transform them into images. A standard ultrasound takes up to 60 minutes and is offered at several of our facilities across western Virginia.

At Carilion Clinic, we perform the following types of ultrasound exams and procedures:

  • Obstetrics (to estimate the due date, measure size and growth, and check the heartbeat and position of baby)
  • Abdominal (gallbladder, pancreas, liver, spleen, kidney)
  • Pelvis (uterus, ovaries)
  • Breast
  • Thyroid
  • Paracentesis or thoracentesis (to remove fluid from your abdomen or chest)
