The one-year training program is designed to give Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellows a comprehensive experience. Fellows are exposed to patients in the inpatient, ambulatory, home/hospice, and long-term care settings. They will interact with a variety of physicians in other specialties. In each setting, they will be a part of an Interdisciplinary Team.

The Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship is comprised of 13, four-week blocks.

Inpatient Consult

There are three blocks required on the Inpatient Consult Service at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  Fellows will be a part of the Interdisciplinary Team in providing a consultative service to the medical staff.  Fellows will be exposed to and lead discussion about goals of care and symptom management. 

Palliative Care Unit

There are three blocks required on the 10-bed Palliative Care Unit at the Salem VAMC.  Fellows will work with the team in attending to symptom management for patients admitted to the unit. 

Home and Hospice Care

There are two blocks required where the resident will work at two local hospices.  Fellows will participate in home visits and attend the IDT hospice meetings.

Long-term Care Rotation

The long-term care rotation is one block and occurs at the long-term care unit at the Salem VAMC. 

Research

There is one block set aside to work on the required research project.  Faculty members at Carilion Clinic and the Salem VAMC have ongoing projects and can serve as research mentors.

Oncology

The fellow will rotate for one block at the Blue Ridge Cancer Center to learn about radiation and chemo therapies as well as end of life care for cancer patients

Special Populations

This rotation gives the fellow exposure to outpatient clinics in infectious diseases such as HIV, memory disorder in Center for Healthy Aging, NICU, PICU, and wound care among others.

Electives

The fellow will have the opportunity to select one elective such as: research, pediatrics, geriatrics, pulm critical care, pain management, among others. Outside rotations are permitted if the discipline is not available through Carilion Clinic.
