If you or someone you are with experiences sudden chest pain, take it seriously. Don’t make the mistake of ignoring chest pain or believing that your discomfort is not important. There are a variety of conditions that can cause chest pain—not all are serious but some, including heart attack, can be fatal.

At Carilion Clinic we take chest pain very seriously. The Chest Pain Center at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is nationally accredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, which means we provide an advanced "plan of action" for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients experiencing chest pain. Our doctors, nurses and technicians have trained extensively in working as a team for quick evaluation and treatment. Patients are immediately assessed and given the treatment they need. Heart attack patients are fast-tracked to life-saving care through the Heart Alert program offered throughout our western Virginia service area.

Patients with chest pain who aren’t having a heart attack may be asked to stay for further evaluation and may be monitored on an outpatient basis. Others may be admitted or discharged for appropriate follow-up treatment at any time during the evaluation period.
