Education

Overview

We have a faculty of physicians who are committed to fellow education and are extremely invested in their development as physicians and gastroenterologists. Our hope is to increase the faculty and provide fellows with additional exposure in a wide variety of gastroenterology-related areas and cutting-edge research to strengthen their clinical experience. Fellows graduating from this institution should leave with a sense of fulfillment and with confidence to embark on their own.

The faculty are committed and spend time educating the fellows on a one-to-one basis depending on their respective rotations. Additionally, fellows are encouraged to pursue research and are expected to present their project ideas in the first six months of their fellowship.

Our three-year program at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine reflects our strong departmental interest in the mechanisms of inflammatory diseases involving the gastroenterology tract. Our alliance with the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC affords rich opportunities for basic and applied clinical research. Fellows are encouraged to explore research interests during their first year. In their second and third years, fellows develop a mature research project leading to a presentation or publication of their scholarly work.

Fellows receive subspecialty training in hepatology, diseases of the pancreas and inflammatory bowel disease as well as comprehensive training in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. Advanced interventional endoscopic and radiographic techniques for the treatment of gastrointestinal disease are also taught, primarily to advanced fellows in a fourth-year program.
