Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

After an illness or injury, your body may not be able to function the way that it used to.

A stroke or brain injury can make it difficult for you to talk or swallow. A burn or fracture can make movement painful. Even an illness or disorder such as arthritis can make it difficult for you to take care of yourself.

We know that you want to return to a normal life, with as much function as possible. We can help.

It’s frustrating when you can’t do things you are used to doing, whether because you’ve suffered an injury, are recovering from an operation or have arthritis, vertigo or another condition.

We are highly trained and specialized in rehabilitation. Our staff will provide you with a personalized program to help you achieve maximum independence and ability.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

After an accident or illness, some patients need intensive therapy before they can leave the hospital.

We offer speech and language, physical, and occupational therapy, as well as nursing services, provided by a team of dedicated professionals who share a common goal: to return patients as soon as possible to their home or home-like setting.  And we are proud that our comprehensive approach helps over 80 percent of our patients achieve this goal.

Facility Type:

Acute Rehabilitation

An illness, accident or even a surgical procedure can make it hard to function normally.

We know that the sooner rehabilitation is started, the better the outcome. We offer acute care rehabilitation to our patients as soon as they are able to participate, and frequently that means while they are still recovering in their hospital beds.

Physical, speech and occupational therapy are offered to help patients regain movement and speech and language abilities. We help our patients to restore function and relieve pain so that they can take care of themselves.

Facility Type:

Occupational Therapy

It can be frustrating when an injury or illness makes it hard for you to take care of yourself or impossible to do your job or enjoy your normal activities.  Occupational therapists assist people across the lifespan who have had a change in their level of function to regain their maximum level of independence in their daily activities, such as self-care, leisure, or work.

Facility Type:

Speech Therapy

Speech, language and/or swallowing problems affect adults for a variety of reasons, including accidents, injuries, progressive or sudden illness, or stroke.

Our certified speech and language pathologists can help. We evaluate and treat people affected with a variety of disorders that affect communication and swallowing.

Physical Therapy

Some people require physical therapy after an illness, injury or surgical procedure.  For others, normal aging or chronic disability may have affected your ability to go about your day being as physically active and independent as you want to be.  If you find yourself in such a situation, know that Carilion Clinic offers extensive physical therapy services throughout Virginia that can be very helpful in relieving pain and discomfort, restoring function and movement, and promoting healing and confidence.

Facility Type:

Massage Therapy

Soft-tissue injuries can be very painful. They can interfere with sleep and limit your range of motion and ability to go about your day. This can cause stress, which leads to a cycle that prevents you from feeling healthy, strong and rested.

Massage therapy can break that cycle.
