This is a one-session class to learn the secrets of calming a crying baby in minutes.  You'll learn, step-by-step, how to help your baby sleep and how to soothe even the fussiest baby.  This class is based on the highly effective, new approach to babies pioneered by Dr. Harvey Karp in his best-selling book and DVD, "The Happiest Baby on the Block."  Class cost includes a Happiest Baby on the Block™ DVD.  Every expectant and new parent, grandparent, and caregiver should attend.

Prepared Childbirth Education

You and your support partner are provided with the information and skills needed to approach labor and birth fully prepared.  This six-week series addresses topics such as breathing and relaxation techniques, the labor partner's role, variations of labor, the labor and birth process, adjustment to parenthood and many other details of labor and birth.  Plan to attend this class in the beginning of your third trimester.

What’s new since you had your baby?  Join in this fun two-hour class and get a head start on being the best grandparent for your newest family addition.  Topics include an overview of current recommendations for infant care, safety measures, how to support the new parents and many more.  This class is offered quarterly and is taught by an experienced educator who is also a grandmother.

Breastfeeding For Working Mothers

Learn how to plan and prepare to continue breastfeeding once you return to work.  Taught by an experienced lactation educator, this class will give mothers step-by-step instructions on what they should prepare while on maternity leave, and how to pump and store their breast milk once they are back at work.  Nursing babies are welcome to come with their mothers.  Please make alternate childcare arrangements for older children.  Attend before or after the birth of your baby.  It is recommended that mothers take the basic breastfeeding class first.

Introducing Your Four Legged Baby To Your New Baby

Breastfeeding 101

Breastfeeding is a learned behavior for both mom and baby.  During this class, a certified lactation consultant provides the information you need to decide if breastfeeding is the right choice for you and your new baby.  If you have already decided to breastfeed, this class will provide basic instructions on breastfeeding techniques and benefits.  Other breastfeeding topics will also be discussed.

Newborn Care

This is as close as you'll come to a baby owner's manual.  A qualified teacher covers the basics of caring for a newborn by addressing such topics as bathing, getting the baby to sleep, understanding baby's cry, diapering, dressing, temperature taking, feeding a newborn, home and car safety, and more.  This class offers expectant parents the opportunity to practice taking care of baby's basic needs.  Plan to attend this one-evening class in your second or third trimester.

Getting you back on your feet to enjoy a comfortable and active life is the goal. Proceed benefit the Carilion Clinic Foundation’s Orthopaedic Fund.
