Prepared Childbirth Education Series 1-6

You and your support partner are provided with the information and skills needed to approach labor and birth fully prepared. This six-week series addresses topics such as breathing and relaxation techniques, the labor partner's role, variations of labor, the labor and birth process, adjustment to parenthood and many other details of labor and birth. Plan to attend this class in the beginning of your third trimester. Taught by a Lamaze certified childbirth educator (LCCE).

Weekend Prepared Childbirth Education

When: 

Saturday 9:30 am to 5:00 pm

Where: 

Carilion Community Medical Building | 4th Floor | Community Room

This class meets on two consecutive Saturdays.  During this series, you and your support partner are provided with the information and skills needed to approach labor and birth fully prepared.  Topics covered include breathing and relaxation techniques, the labor partner's role, variations of labor, the labor and birth process, adjustment to parenthood, and many other details of labor and birth.  Plan to attend this class in the beginning of your third trimester.

Newborn Care

When: 

Tuesday 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Where: 

CRMH Rehab Auditorium Roanoke, VA

This is as close as you'll come to a baby owner's manual.  A registered nurse covers the basics of caring for a newborn by addressing such topics as bathing, getting the baby to sleep, understanding baby's cry, diapering, dressing, temperature taking, feeding a newborn, home and car safety, and more.  This class offers expectant parents the opportunity to practice taking care of baby's basic needs.  Plan to attend this one-evening class in your second or third trimester.

Infant CPR/Safety

When: 

Tuesday 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Where: 

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital | Rehab Auditorium

Learn about the basics of infant CPR in this educational class.  The class offers hands-on training and experience in infant CPR, but is not a certification class.  You will also learn how to keep your home safe for your child.  There are many hidden dangers in the home that can injure or kill a child.  This class will give you tips on what you can do to avoid these unnecessary incidents.

Breastfeeding 101

Thursday 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Where: 

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital | 13th Floor | West Conference Room A

Breastfeeding is a learned behavior for both mom and baby.  During this class, a certified lactation consultant provides the information you need to decide if breastfeeding is the right choice for you and your new baby.  If you have already decided to breastfeed, this class will provide basic instructions on breastfeeding techniques and benefits.  Other breastfeeding topics will also be discussed.

Developmental Approaches to Wound Healing Treatment, Delivery, and Design

Dr. Jay Potts conducts research on congenital cardiac defects that involve the atrioventricular canal, which is responsible for the production of the atrioventricular valves and the membranous portion of the interventricular septum.

Stroke Screening

When: 

Saturday 8:00 am to 12:00 pm

If you are 45 or older and have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, a family history or any of these risk factors, or if you are a smoker, join us at this stroke screening event to make sure your health is in check.

Not all people are eligible, including individuals currently being treated for TIA, stroke, or carotid stenosis.  Limited space is available, and preference will be given to those who have not participated in our annual free stroke screening in within the past 18 months.

Girl Talk

Many times, young girls are faced with situations or decisions that need a little adult insight. That's where Girl Talk can help.

This class is designed for mothers and their 9 - 12 year-old daughters.  Intended to strengthen communication concerning adolescence and puberty, this interactive workshop covers a wide range of topics to help girls make informed, responsible decisions concerning their body. Plan now to sign up, because a little bit of girl talk can go a long way.
