What to Expect When Arriving at a Carilion Clinic Emergency Department
Q: What information will I need to provide when I arrive?
A: You will need to provide basic personal information, including full name, home address, age/birth date, social security number, list of current medications, and insurance information.
Q: What happens after I am registered?
A: A staff member will take you into an assessment room where a nurse will ask medical questions and family history to help us understand the type of care you may need. It is important to provide a current list of medications and an accurate medical history.
Q: What happens after the medical history assessment?
A: Once the nurse has taken your medical history and created your chart, you will be taken into a room or be asked to wait in the waiting area until a room is available.
Q: What happens if my condition changes while I’m waiting for a room?
A: Please notify a nurse or medical staff member of the change immediately.
Q: What happens once I am in the treatment room?
A: Once you are in the treatment room, you may have to wait to see a physician. While you are a waiting, a nurse may begin your care. Patients will be seen based on severity of illness or injury, so your wait time may vary. Staff will continue to check in on you and if your condition changes, please notify us immediately.
Q: If tests are performed, how long will I have to wait for my results?
A: Waiting for test results can take time. Our doctors may want to discuss your results with specialists prior to seeing you. Paying special attention to your care can take time, but soon a doctor will develop a plan of care for you and a nurse will provide instructions for you if you are being discharged.
Q: Will I be admitted for further care?
A: Depending on your condition and the results of tests and/or your doctor’s decision, you may be admitted for additional care or observation. About one in five patients who visit the Emergency Department are admitted for further care. Our staff will work with the hospital to obtain an appropriate room for you as quickly as possible.
