Training Obstetrics and Gynecology Physicians at Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion
The Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency is designed to prepare physicians for a career in clinical medicine as practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology, and as primary healthcare providers for women. All residents completing the four years of training should be able to pass the written and oral examinations prepared by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The variety of practice styles among our faculty allows residents to be prepared to enter into subspecialty fellowship training, private practice or to consider future opportunities in academic medicine.
The Ob/Gyn Residency program endorses and subscribes to the goals set forth in the most current edition of Educational Objectives, Core Curriculum in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as published by the Council of Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Indeed, at the end of the training program, each senior resident should be conversant in all of the referenced areas and should have sufficient clinical acumen and technical facility to accomplish the surgical and diagnostic tasks set forth.
All of the goals set forth are predicated upon the fact that our Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program's top priority is to provide a structured and fertile educational experience. The efficacy of educational processes varies according to the environment and individuals involved. This program assumes that diversity of technique, incorporating the classical forms of teaching, coupled with creative models and simulations, will benefit the majority of residents.
It is assumed that the resident is strongly motivated toward a career in the clinical practice of obstetrics and gynecology, and therefore, is personally responsible for pursuing his or her graduate medical education. While a multitude of formal educational venues is provided, continued reading and research on associated topics is vital toward successfully meeting the educational goals.
