The mission of the Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion Residency in Internal Medicine is to promote excellence in medical education and patient care. Our vision is that every resident in our training program will become a quality, caring and compassionate clinician, well-prepared for the practice of general internal medicine or sub-specialty training, hospital medicine, or academic medicine. Additionally, we embrace Carilion's mission, values and guiding principles.
Carilion Clinic provides primary care to a local population of over 250,000 people while serving as the region's only tertiary care, level I trauma center for over one million residents of western Virginia, and eastern West Virginia.
Currently, Carilion Clinic is in the midst of an exciting and bold transformation into a patient-centered, physician-lead, university medical school related multidisciplinary clinic. This transformation has and will continue to allow Carilion Clinic to adapt readily to the ever-changing health care environment of the 21st century. As part of this process, Carilion Clinic has partnered with Virginia Tech to form the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The school stresses inter-professionalism among its students and has a research focus at the core of its academic mission. Not only will this endeavor enhance Carilion Clinic's transformation to a clinic model, it will also provide the Internal Medicine Residency with exciting growth opportunities in the area of scholarly work and also allow for an increase in the breadth of professional and personal perspective among its residents.
