From the Emergency Medicine Department Chair
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Carilion Clinic, I welcome you to our web site and thank you for considering our program.
The Carilion Clinic Department of Emergency Medicine is an amazing entity that is unlike any other training program in the field of emergency medicine. We are proud of our program, hospital, and area and hope that the web materials will give you insight into who we are and what we do. If you wish to discover more about us, please don’t hesitate to contact us any time.
Carilion Clinic Department of Emergency Medicine – who we are: Our department is one of eight major academic departments at Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The dream of an academic center and physician practice group for southwest Virginia was launched in 2006 with the creation of a vision. The vision was, and remains, a physician-led organization that would combine the best of clinical medicine with the benefits of academic medicine and medical research. A few short years later, we continue to strive toward this vision in an environment that combines excellence, beauty and excitement – while always keeping the needs of our patients as our highest priority. This year, the department will staff Carilion hospitals with over 80 emergency physicians and providers, in 8 locations, with service to over 200,000 annual patient visits
Why Southwest Virgina? Well, do you know what a “Hokie” is? If the answer is “yes,” skip to the next section and just apply… if the answer is “no” then you should learn more about Southwest Virginia as well as Virginia Tech. The Hokie is the official Virginia Tech mascot. Virginia Tech is an essential partner in our story – an outstanding academic university in the United States that is approximately 30 minutes from the new Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and our clinical hub for Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia. Roanoke is a wonderful “small” southern city with a wonderfully diverse population of individuals and cultures offering a broad selection of opportunities. Roanoke occupies a unique location in mountainous Southwestern Virginia. Want 360 degree mountain views – got that! Beautiful, crystal clear and historic rivers – got that! A safe, nonviolent, small city – got that! White water – got that! World class cycling – got that! Rock climbing and world class hiking – got that! Restaurants with fabulous local food that ranges from international cuisine to traditional, southern cooking – got that! The list goes on and on – Roanoke is a fabulous place to live: work, play, family. One can have it all here and at a price one wouldn’t find in our more famous competitors' locations.
Why something new? Anything worth having is worth working very hard to obtain. Most emergency physicians we know believe this statement lies at the core of their clinical identity. Emergency medicine is hard, challenging, full of tension and uncertainty – all these for the benefit of possibly making a difference one life at a time, working among colleagues and friends who share the same commitment. We understand the challenge inherent in building important things – an academic department, a residency, a medical school in a way that few emergency physicians have even considered in the history of our specialty. This kind of experience and commitment yields an environment for possibility as a resident physician that is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Such opportunity does not come with other programs, or other places.
This is an exciting time for Carilion Clinic and the Department of Emergency Medicine at Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Contact us, learn more about us - you will find that our enthusiasm is infectious and we will be pleased to consider your interest in our journey.

From the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director
Welcome! Thank you for your interest in our exciting and innovative Emergency Medicine (EM) program. This is a great place to train and I invite you to look further at our program.
Our mission is to train world class emergency medicine physicians and thought leaders. The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine has embarked on an innovative curriculum to develop thought leaders in medicine. We continue that same mission by further developing residents in the Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
We approach resident development through a cohesive curriculum that is tailored to the individual resident. We believe that great emergency physicians are not only expert clinicians, but leaders, educators, and innovators. These skills do not suddenly appear when one becomes an attending. They must be developed, improved upon, and perfected. We develop these characteristics in each of our residents through exposure to diverse clinical experiences, mentorship in leadership and teaching, and scientific inquiry.
Our diverse faculty members are here to teach. We strive to provide intense training experiences that give residents leadership and decision-making opportunities. Residents who choose to train here will also have in-depth, career enriching, non-clinical experiences that elsewhere are often reserved for fellows or attendings. We require residents to serve on committees in the hospital and health system-and protect their time to do so. Residents can choose to lead EMS units or lead performance improvement and administration initiatives in the clinical environments. Each of our residents has the opportunity to work with clinical and industrial engineering teams on their own project to reinvent, improve, or develop a process within one of our EDs or across our system. As a physician-led organization, we offer an integrated hub-and-spoke network of hospitals and clinics throughout southwest Virginia.
We believe EM training is best done by training in the Emergency Department (ED). We also realize that experiences across the system of health care bring important perspective to the future leaders, researchers, and innovators in emergency medicine. We understand the climate of health care and the unique safety net we provide to patients, not only in our region, but also as the only tertiary-care hospital for hundreds of miles.
Regionalized care models are not something we just talk about here; we work in a high functioning model, and you will train in it - at all different levels. Our rural rotations expose you to the outer rims of the spoke. This is a great opportunity to run a small ED with board certified EM physician supervision in hospitals that have no cardiologists, orthopedists, ENT, etc.
The Carilion Clinic – Virginia Tech Carilion Emergency Medicine Residency Program is an incredible experience you will not find elsewhere. We train physicians who can practice anywhere. To train with us is an opportunity to train for a broad range of emergency medicine potential including community, academic, and rural practices.
Thank you again for visiting our site and considering our residency program. I encourage you to contact us with any questions. We look forward to meeting you.
