The summer internship program is a full-time, paid summer position. Two interns are hired for the summer and are scheduled to work 40 hours per week. Interns must be available for 10 consecutive weeks, beginning around the last week of May and continuing through the last week of July or first week of August. A commitment of two to three weekends and some evenings will be incorporated into the internship schedule. Scheduled hours are determined by the preceptor.
Approximately 60-70 percent of the intern's schedule will be devoted to participation in the medication dispensing process. Emphasis will be placed on the practice of proper aseptic technique and sterile preparation, understanding safe medication use, learning medication use policy, and distributive functions.
Clinical activities account for about 10-20 percent of the schedule. These activities include: observing and working with pharmacists in all areas of the hospital, attendance at weekly journal club and various department meetings, and participation in weekly discussions.
In addition to participating in the medication dispensing process and clinical activities, interns will complete an assigned summer project, which will be presented to the Department of Pharmacy at the end of the summer.
