The Carilion Clinic Family Medicine Residency is dually-accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP). We offer a three-year program in allopathic and osteopathic Family Medicine.
Osteopathic residents have the option of being dually board-certified by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the American Board of Family Medicine at the end of their three years of training. We do not offer an osteopathic rotating internship.
By integrating our residency curriculum with osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT), we have strengthened our musculoskeletal curriculum in a number of areas for our residents. Musculoskeletal problems account for 30 percent of family medicine visits, and osteopathic skills can be invaluable in conditions such as back pain and sports medicine injuries.
Locations
Residents and faculty members' clinical practices are located in two newly renovated centers. Each center is equipped with on-site laboratory services, OB ultrasound, minor procedure rooms, offices, and a library with internet access.
We offer family-centered prenatal care, minor surgery, and training in procedures such as colposcopy, nasolaryngoscopy, spirometry, ultrasonography, and LEEP. Patient education, disease prevention, and counseling are also provided. Each office and exam area networks with our electronic medical record system, with access to digitized hospital x-rays.
