TRAINING GENERAL PRACTICE DENTAL RESIDENTS

Welcome to the Dental General Practice Residency (GPR). The hospital-based dental service was established in 1980 and has experienced unprecedented growth, thanks to the support of Carilion Clinic in Virginia. The program is well integrated into Carilion's mission of providing comprehensive patient care services, resulting in optimum healthcare outcomes.

Our full-time staff consists of:

  • Five GPR / Comprehensive Dentistry trained general dentists
  • Three pediatric dental specialists
  • Adjunct faculty:
    • Endodontists
    • Periodontists
    • Oral Surgeons
    • General Dentists

Our professional staff is committed to quality patient care and the education of future leaders.

Since our Dental Residency program is well established with entrenched referral sources and a well-trained professional staff, you can expect a very diversified and intellectually stimulating educational experience. You will gain knowledge, experience, and expertise in patient care and practice management utilizing the most advanced technologies in dentistry.

Our program will comprehensively train residents to the GPR training guidelines set forth by the Council on Dental Accreditation as well as include advanced and comprehensive training in dental implantology, posterior molar endodontics, third molar removal, periodontal surgery, oral oncology, management of patients at the medical/dental interface, nasoalveolar molding for cleft lip and palate and an IV sedation exposure. Upon completion of the optional 2nd year, the resident will complete the conscious sedation curriculum and clinical case documentation which meets most state licensing certification requirements.

Our dental residents will be trained to deliver care in multiple settings such as the hospital-based outpatient adult and pediatric clinics, inpatient bedside consultations, operating room, long-term care facilities and community service experiences.

Additional experience will be gained in teaching medical students in the oral health/oral medicine curriculum at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

If you desire a dental general practice residency experience that will be challenging, fulfilling, and rewarding, join us at Carilion Clinic.
