2012 Community Health Assessment Results

A team made of up community health care providers has released the results of a comprehensive survey of the Roanoke Valley’s top health care needs. The Roanoke Valley Community Health Needs Assessment was led by Carilion Clinic, which received a 12-month Health Center Planning Grant to fund the project. From January through April 2012, the team conducted a comprehensive health needs assessment survey, inviting residents across the Roanoke Valley to provide their opinion of the region’s greatest unmet needs. Focus group discussions were also held with residents of the region’s medically underserved areas. The assessment revealed three underlying themes that impact the health of individuals:

  • Access to health services
  • Coordination of care
  • Wellness and health literacy

Moving forward, the Community Health Assessment Team has created a strategic plan featuring five key goals: 1. Expand access to affordable, comprehensive primary care services for underserved populations in the Roanoke Valley. 2. Improve access to preventive services and dental care for uninsured and underserved adults in the Roanoke Valley. 3. Improve mental health and reduce substance abuse by increasing access to appropriate and coordinated mental health and substance abuse services including prevention services. 4. Improve coordination of care and ensure access to available resources and services that address the healthcare needs of the community. 5. Create a culture of wellness and manage chronic disease by promoting a healthy lifestyle, consuming a nutritious diet and achieving an optimal body weight. Work is underway to recruit additional community support for this important, ongoing mission.
