physician (and mother), heal thyself

I did nothing yesterday, well, almost nothing. Nothing important.  Sometimes doing nothing IS important.

I awoke at about 8:30 (usually I am up at 5:15), took my time getting ready and having breakfast, then went to the salon for a decadent "fire and ice" pedicure, followed by lunch with my daughter and baby grandson, a trip to a park with them to watch the ducks and geese, and more of "nothing" when I got home. Fixed a lovely dinner of lamb, rice, portabellos and fresh strawberries, spent some time in my craft room, and then watched a really useless movie with my husband on pay-per-view.

Its important, to sometimes be selfish, to worry about yourself, to do for yourself, and to just relax. I didn't write a blog post, I didn't answer any email, and I didn't pay any bills. Today I awoke refreshed, ready to tackle the laundry, the bills, the blog, the email. I loaded pictures of my grandson to his photo website, and am ready to make enough tomato sauce to last for the next 6 months.

Tomorrow I start "on service" and may or may  not have enough time to write. But I felt it was important to share with you all what I think is really most important--find a way to take care of yourself.  Spend a day doing "nothing" and let your mind wander. Get a pedicure, a massage, a facial. Or, just take yourself to one of those large bookstores, and spend an hour reading a useless magazine, where no one can call your name ("MOMMY!"), no one can expect anything from you at all, except perhaps that you don't spill your coffee on the magazine you haven't bought. Go for a walk, take a yoga class, ride your bike, take a bath. Whatever. Just take care of yourself so you will be able to take care of your kids, your partner, your parents,  your patients....oh, yes, and your job.

Enjoy today, so you can enjoy tomorrow.
