Life is a Journey - Jude Prashaw

"Art is our one true global language. It knows no nation, it favors no race, and it acknowledges no class. It speaks to our need to reveal, heal, and transform. It transcends our ordinary lives and lets us imagine what is possible."Richard Kamler

I am Jude Prashaw, a clay sculptor and Carilion's third Artist in Residence.  I thank Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley for his vision of the Healing Arts Program:  an opportunity to include the arts as one component of healing the whole person. And I thank the generosity of the donors; you are inviting healing to take place on a level beyond even the expert medical care given at Carilion.  Life is a journey, and for me a boat is a symbol of that journey. Sometimes the water is smooth and the sailing blissful. Other times, storms arise and we grasp whatever we can to stay afloat. During my residency, I hope to co-create a boat with you. I invite you to stop by when I am in the lobby, to write a note: a hope, a wish, a concern for someone you are visiting or perhaps for yourself. We will place the notes in a boat filled with water. I will mix our paper notes into the clay that will form the body of the boat. Finally, after the boat is fired in my kiln, hidden within her hull, she will carry our wishes, hopes and desires. When I am not in the various lobbies, I imagine I will be a frequent visitor in the pediatric center (I am drawn to people under three feet tall!). "Thank you so much for coming," a mother said, after I helped her bedridden daughter create a small sculpture in clay. "Please tell whoever is responsible for this program that you are making such a difference in our lives. "   I believe a little clay or music, or art or dance or poetry or theater - mixed with passion and baked with love is like chocolate: irresistible and soothing to the soul. Please join me on this journey at Carilion; help me to make a boat worthy of our deepest desires. Tuesdays and Thursdays   10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
