Speech-language pathology specializes in treating the full range of speech, language, feeding, fluency, voice and pragmatic disorders associated with children. At Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital, we are committed to providing outstanding care for children in coordination with other primary care and specialty care providers, schools, daycare centers and community service agencies.
We work closely with families to address their needs and to incorporate their goals into each child’s treatment plan.
We provide diagnostic and therapeutic services for a variety of speech-language and feeding/swallowing disorders, including:
■Aphasia (language loss due to brain injury)
■Apraxia (difficulty sequencing speech sounds)
■Articulation/phonological disorders (difficulty pronouncing speech sounds)
■Autism spectrum disorders
■Central auditory processing disorders
■Cognitive linguistic disorders
■Communication difficulties related to hearing impairment
■Dysarthria (slow, slurred speech)
■Feeding aversion and swallowing issues

■Velopharyngeal insufficiency (hypernasal speech)
We commonly perform the following procedures and diagnostic tests:
■Central auditory processing testing
■Consultative, diagnostic and direct therapy in oral-motor, feeding and swallowing
■Modified barium swallow studies for evaluation of swallowing function
■Evaluation and treatment of resonance disorders
