Emergency Department

Serve as host to patients and families in waiting area, located on second floor of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Escort patients and family members back to triage area. Occasionally perform clerical duties. Keep magazines and reading materials in orderly manner and replenish as needed. Provides directions to cafeteria, gift shop, etc.

  • Qualifications: Must be able to convey information between staff and families. Firm, but compassionate personality.
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Hours needed: Seven days a week.
  • Skills: Greet patients and visitors, work closely with staff.

Gift Shop

An exciting retail opportunity to work with patients, visitors and staff. Assist customers with selecting merchandise, stock and straighten shelves and display areas; Water fresh plants in the flower cooler.

  • Qualifications: Must be able to stand, walk and kneel for long periods of time.
  • Minimum age: 14
  • Hours needed: Mornings, Afternoons, Evenings Monday through Saturday.
  • Skills: Greet customers, stock and deliver supplies.

Hospice

Carilion Hospice Services Roanoke would treasure more volunteers to provide occasional relief support to hospice families. Founded in 1980, Carilion Roanoke Hospice was the first hospice in Roanoke. Ever since then our trained and dedicated volunteers have offered practical and emotional support to terminally ill patients and their families. Our volunteer training provides information about the many aspects of the dying process and the various ways to assist the dying through their end of life journey. Many of our graduates find the training itself a transforming experience. There is no obligation to volunteer upon completion of the training. Information Desk

A terrific opportunity to assist the public by escorting and directing patients, families and guests entering the hospital. Volunteers are trained to work alongside Guest Services (information desk) staff, escort patients to their rooms as well as hospital departments and provide locations of lodging facilities for overnight visitors among other services internally and externally. Particularly a good fit for outgoing individuals.

  • Qualifications: Must be able to walk extensively and push wheelchairs. Ability to navigate throughout the hospital.
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Hours needed: 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Skills: Greet patients and visitors, work closely with staff. Answer telephone.

Mended Hearts

As a jointly-sponsored volunteer opportunity between Carilion and the local Mended Hearts Chapter 144, Mended Hearts volunteers staff reception areas, answer phones, and act as liaisons between families and staff within the cardiac services area of the hospital. Mended Hearts volunteers who have had a heart procedure are also qualified to visit patients and share experiences as part of the healing process.

  • Qualifications: Must be able to interact supportively with patients during recovery and family members and guests during periods of stress and possible grief.

  • Hours needed: Mornings, afternoons Monday through Friday.
  • Skills: Greet patients and visitors, communicate with staff.

Mother-Baby Unit

Volunteers greet visitors coming to see new moms and their babies as well as assists with clerical tasks. Because the volunteer sits at the nurses’ station, this job is ideally suited for anyone considering a career in nursing.

  • Qualifications: Must be able to interact with and take direction from staff. Excellent customer service skills.
  • Minimum age: 14
  • Hours needed: Shifts available seven days a week, as early as 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Skills: Answer telephone, greet visitors, filing, task-oriented and organized.

Pediatrics

Within the comforting and cheerful environment of the Pediatrics playroom, volunteers work with children and families individually or in small groups under the direction of the Child Life Specialist. Volunteers also interact with bedridden children; participate in appropriate play as well as arts and crafts with patients; relay information to the clinical care team, and help plan, prepare and conduct playroom activities, special projects, events and parties, etc.

  • Qualifications: Must be able to interact easily with children. Must be able to kneel, if necessary, to entertain children.
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Hours needed: Shifts available seven days a week, as early as 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Skills: Comfortable with children in the play area and at bedside; patient activities; Interact with parents.

PetPals

An exciting opportunity to work with patients in the hospital setting by visiting with your Delta certified pet. Delta members will visit approved areas and spend time with patients, families and staff.

  • Qualifications: Must have proof of Delta certification. Must be able to control pet during visits and interact easily with patients. Warm bedside manner is a must, because most patients are confined to their room.
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Hours needed: Mornings, afternoons seven days a week.
  • Skills: Control pet. Interact warmly with patients, visitors and staff.

Reception

Be a part of Carilion Clinic’s unofficial welcome wagon! A role ideal for the consummate “people person.” Greet patients and guests as they enter and escort them to their appointment. Push them in a wheelchair if they need assistance.

  • Qualifications: Must be able to sit and walk. Must be able to push a wheelchair.
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Hours needed: 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Skills: Excellent customer service; Greet patients and guests. Answer telephones. Ability to navigate the hospital.

Rehab

An opportunity to work with patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Serve as host in the waiting area. Volunteers in these departments are cancer survivors and completed their treatments a year prior to volunteering.

  • Qualifications: Must be able to interact supportively with family members and guests during periods of stress.
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Hours needed: Mornings, afternoons Monday through Friday.
  • Skills: Greet patients and visitors, communicate with staff. Serve refreshments.

Ronald McDonald Family Room

The Ronald McDonald Family Room is an adult respite room available for immediate family members and guests of hospitalized children. The Family Room is located on the 14th Floor of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital next to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It provides a home-like setting where families can relax without leaving the hospital, and volunteers are crucial in ensuring this room is a restful and peaceful environment for our guests. The Family Room is open only when a trained volunteer is present. Duties include welcoming and registering guests, answering phones, providing a friendly and supportive atmosphere, and maintaining a clean and orderly room.

  • Qualifications: Must be able to sit, assist patients checking in for procedures, and accurately convey information between medical staff and families. Must be able to interact supportively with family members and guests during periods of stress.
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Hours needed: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Seven days a week.
  • Skills: Greet patients and visitors, communicate with families. Minor record-keeping. Serve refreshments.

Waiting Room

An opportunity to volunteer as a liaison between the healthcare staff and families/visitors. Provide information as available from the clinical team; answer phones; and assist with escorting visitors around the hospital in an effort to make them as comfortable as possible.
