Orientation
Orientation plays an important role in ensuring that you receive and understand the information you need to succeed in your new position. Our commitment to a thorough orientation will help you be successful.
Before you even start work, our education consultants are planning your personalized orientation to the organization, to your service area and to your department. You will receive your schedule during your orientation on your first day with Carilion Clinic. In your schedule, you'll find additional customer service training and clinical classes that are required for your specialty. Each facility conducts its own orientation following Carilion’s orientation.
Once you are in your department, you will work one-on-one with your preceptor, an experienced nurse who has been trained to guide you through orientation. Your education consultant will work with your manager and preceptor to ensure that your orientation goes smoothly.
Continuing Education
As a Carilion Clinic employee, you will have access to our award-winning HR Training & Development. This department is made up of five institutes to deliver content appropriate for any learning need.
You'll find an array of instructor-led and online classes as well as various educational conferences, many of which are open to the community. Your registration fees at these conferences are paid for by Carilion.
In addition, employees may take advantage of just-in-time learning on the unit. Preceptors, unit educators and clinical nurse specialists are available to you if you have an immediate need. For example, if you have not had an opportunity to use a piece of equipment, you can work directly with your unit educator to go step-by-step through the process of set-up, monitoring and troubleshooting the equipment. Or you can learn additional information about an unfamiliar diagnosis or procedure right on the unit.

Carilion partners with educational institutes to provide clinical experience onsite at Carilion through clinicals and practicums.
