Breast Surgery

At Carilion Clinic, we recognize that choosing a breast surgeon is a very personal decision. Clinical expertise and quality in all areas of breast treatment are critical, but so is a personal touch. Our breast surgery team is committed to open communication with you, and we strive to make you feel as comfortable as possible at all stages of your treatment process.

Carilion Clinic's breast surgery program begins with a weekly pre-treatment planning for every malignant diagnosis. Each case is reviewed during the interdisciplinary conference with members of the team including a panel of radiologists, pathologists, medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons and plastic surgeons. This team works together to plan the patient's care and choices.

The program also includes weekly benign correlation conferences to review every benign biopsy diagnosis. This offers a "second read"of benign findings, correlating pathology and imaging results.

Carilion also offers a variety of supportive therapies:

Our Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Program

When you are preparing for breast cancer surgery, we invite you to join our breast cancer rehabilitation program. Coordinated by a registered nurse, we provide the education and support you need during this critical time of your life.

Complementary Therapies

In addition to conventional medical treatments for breast cancer, you may want to use complementary therapies during treatment and recovery. Such therapies might include yoga, meditation, massage, exercise, counseling, and meeting with support groups. Carilion Breast Surgery can help you connect with local resources in our Roanoke Valley community.

Counseling

As you make your way through the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up stages of breast cancer, we want you to know that you are not alone. Our licensed clinical therapist is available to meet with you individually or with you and your family.

Our Second Opinion Breast Cancer Program

Making decisions about surgery can be difficult, particularly when you are confronted with a new diagnosis. If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer at another institution, you may want a second opinion, and we are here to help you comprehensively explore and evaluate all treatment options. Our Carilion team of expert radiologists, pathologists, and oncologists are available to assist you in identifying and assessing your options. Our schedulers prioritize second-opinion appointments so you get the answers you need quickly.
