Famous Anthony's Pink Pancakes Pay Off for the Carilion Clinic Breast Care Center

Remember Famous Anthony's Pink Pancake fundraiser during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise money for the Carilion Clinic Breast Care Center?  The restaurant sold the tasty treats at its nine locations in Roanoke, Lynchburg and the New River Valley.  More than 5500 pink pancakes were consumed and today, Famous Anthony's Vice President Bonny Neale dropped by the Breast Care Center with a check for $1,035.

Carilion's Accountable Care Organizations Showing Positive Results

A new survey by Premier, Inc. indicates Accountable Care Organizations are growing more slowly that initially anticipated, but hospital executives expect to double ACO participation in the next year. Carilion Clinic continues to be ahead of the curve. Physician-leaders from Carilion, who participated in Premier's survey announcement, say they're already seeing positive results from the Carilion/Aetna ACO, and the Medicare Shared Savings Program, Doctors Connected.  The results include a decrease in hospital readmissions and unnecessary emergency room visits.

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Among Nation's Best for Hip & Knee Replacement

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital has been identifed by Medicare as one of the best hospitals in the country for hip and knee replacement. Medicare's Hospital Compare web site ranks CRMH as "better than the national rate" for complications following hip and knee replacement surgery.  Nationally, only 95 hospitals ranked better than average, and in Virginia, CRMH is one of only four hospitals credited with a better than average ranking. Based on the Hospital Compare data, Kaiser Health News created a list showing the 95 hospitals that scored the best, and the 97 hospitals with lower than average scores.

Carilion Celebrates the Lights of Love Christmas Tree

The new Christmas tree in front of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is much more than a holiday decoration.  Each light symbolizes an expression of kindness through the Carilion Clinic Foundation's Lights of Love campaign.  A donation to Lights of Love "purchases" a light on the tree and an ornament in honor of a friend or loved one.  The money raised will pay for hotel rooms for patients' families who travel long distances and need a place to stay.

Blue Ridge Cancer Care Physician Dies Following Tragic Accident

We express our condolences and best wishes to the family, friends, co-workers and patients of Dr. Gerald Schertz, a physician with Blue Ridge Cancer Care. He was struck by a car while walking from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital to his office in the Carilion Clinic Cancer Center, and passed away on November 29th.

Member One Federal Credit Union Raises $7,000 for the Carilion Clinic Breast Care Center

In October, Member One Federal Credit Union observed Breast Cancer Awareness Month by selling special pink hoodie sweatshirts encouraging women to “Check and Protect Like a Superhero”.  A portion of the proceeds was earmarked for the Carilion Clinic Breast Care Center.  More than 300 people purchased the shirts and a delegation from Member One presented the Carilion Breast Care Center staff with a check for $7,037.82.   We are deeply grateful to Member One for their support of our mission to provide life-saving screening and breast care services to women in our region, and to everyone who purchased and is now proudly wearing one of the pink sweatshirts!

Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Tazewell Community Hospital celebrated 40 years of service to the region. At a special recognition ceremony, hospital staff and guests had the opportunity to meet the first baby born at the hospital,  Marine Lt. Carilion Clinic Breast Care Center receives more than $10,000 from two Smith Mountain Lake Organizations.

  The Carilion Clinic Breast Care Center will be able to better assist its patients thanks to the hard work and generosity of two Smith Mountain Lake organizations. The Smith Mountain Lake Poker Run presented the Center with a check for $5,523 from its second annual event. The funds will be used to purchase equipment for the center. The Smith Mountain Lake Fraternal Order of Eagles presented the center with a check for $5,000 from its fundraising activities. The funds will be used to provide every patient with a copy of a comprehensive breast cancer treatment guide.

100 nurses sitting shoulder-to-shoulder in the auditorium stood and cheered as they learned that Carilion's Roanoke hospitals, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, have achieved Magnet® status for the third time. Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Centerrecognizes health care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice.  

“Magnet recognition is the highest honor an organization can receive for nursing services; it is the gold standard for nursing programs. Recognition is a testament of the quality of our patient care and the incredible passion for nursing shown by so many different people from many departments and levels within our organization,” said Carilion Clinic President and CEO Nancy Howell Agee. “Achieving—then repeatedly reaffirming—this designation was only made possible through the hard work, persistence and team work of everyone involved. I am so proud that we have achieved this designation once again.”
