Roanoke Physician Honored for Lifetime of Service to the Region

Carilion Clinic establishes the annual “Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Award”

ROANOKE, Va. (June 15, 2012) Robert L.A. Keeley, M.D.,  a leader, innovator and community servant with a medical career approaching 60 years was honored last night by the Carilion Clinic Foundation with the inaugural “Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Award”.  The award will be presented annually to a health care professional in recognition of significant service that affects the health and well-being of the Roanoke region.

Dr. Keeley, 91, is a board certified thoracic surgeon and one of the founders of Jefferson Surgical Clinic, which was established in Roanoke in 1956.

Following his graduation in 1944 from the UVa Medical School, Keeley completed his internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., and his residency at the Duke University Medical School.  As a member of the United States Navy, he served World War II and Korea.

During his medical career, Dr. Keeley has served as Chief of Surgery for Jefferson Hospital, Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital and Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He has served on the Board of Directors for Community Hospital and Carilion Health System. He currently services as Medical Director for Nursing Services at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, a position he has held since 1996.

“I believe that we each have a responsibility to serve,” Keeley said upon accepting the award.  “We must work together as part of a larger community and care for one another.”

The Carilion Clinic Foundation also announced that it will name a new “healing arts” program after Dr. Keeley. The Dr. Robert L. A. Keeley Healing Arts Program will integrate the creative arts into the healing process and feature literary, performing and visual art experiences.
