Should Parents Lose Custody of Dangerously Obese Children?

A commentary published in The Journal of the American Medical Association states;

“In severe instances of childhood obesity, removal from the home may be justifiable from a legal standpoint because of imminent health risks and the parents’ chronic failure to address medical problem”

Dr. Alice Ackerman, Chair of Pediatrics at Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital says there are other options.   She spoke to reporter Lindsey Ward with WSLS-TV.  Here is an excerpt from the story.

    No, I do not think children should be taken from their parents for being obese or morbidly obese. Any many cases, this is a genetic problem.There are many parents who cannot afford, in today’s economy, to buy healthy foods for themselves or their children. What are they to do then?A lot of parents need to be educated in healthy eating instead of being punished and having their children ripped out of their care/homes. This is not good for the children’s mental health.
