Surgical Critical Care

Carilion Clinic’s board-certified surgeons are specialized in surgical intensive care and are highly experienced in treating critically ill patients. Our healthcare team also includes nurses who have earned their critical care designation (CCRNs), pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical/occupational therapists, and many other specialists.

This team of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals is specially trained to care for critically ill patients whose conditions are unstable or unpredictable.

Following major operations, injuries, or illness patients are moved to Carilion Clinic’s intensive care unit. Our mission in the ICU is to help patients through life-threatening events and help them recover and return home to a normal life.

Trauma Services

The majority of trauma cases each year result from motor vehicle accidents, falls, firearm injuries and burns.

Our mission at Carilion Clinic is to provide comprehensive trauma care to the community in an effort to reduce injury and violence-related deaths. To this end, we are committed to promoting injury prevention, education and research, while constantly improving our quality of trauma care.

Members of the Trauma team, along with members from LifeGuard, staff the mobile medical unit at the Martinsville races and the annual Dental Mission of Mercy.
