Level One Trauma Center at Carilion Clinic in Virginia
Carilion Clinic is proud to have been the first Level I trauma center in Virginia—the highest designation of trauma care—and we have continued to provide comprehensive access to trauma services and specialists since 1983.
A Level I Trauma Center provides the highest level of surgical care to trauma patients. Being treated at a Level I Trauma Center increases a seriously injured patient’s chances of survival by an estimated 20 to 25 percent.
In addition to providing acute care at our Trauma I center, Carilion Clinic also participates in statewide emergency preparedness programs. This participation includes these critically important programs:
- Promoting disaster preparedness in southwestern Virginia
- Ensuring a coordinated response for mass casualty incidents
- Earning Carilion Clinic more than $150,000 in supplies & equipment from the Near Southwest Preparedness Alliance to be used in our area

Trauma Services
The majority of trauma cases each year result from motor vehicle accidents, falls, firearm injuries and burns.
Our mission at Carilion Clinic is to provide comprehensive trauma care to the community in an effort to reduce injury and violence-related deaths. To this end, we are committed to promoting injury prevention, education and research, while constantly improving our quality of trauma care.
Members of the Trauma team, along with members from Carilion Clinic Life-Guard, staff the mobile medical unit at the Martinsville races and the annual Dental Mission of Mercy.
