Carilion Clinic Rehabilitation Services is proud to offer inpatient rehabilitation at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital. Located on the renovated seventh floor of CRCH, the Inpatient Rehabilitation unit features 34 private rooms, with breathtaking views of downtown Roanoke, Mill Mountain and the Roanoke Valley. We use a variety of approaches including community re-entry, pet therapy, neuropsychology and therapeutic recreation.
The unit is the next step in rehabilitation for patients who need a short stay with intensive physical, occupational, and/or speech-language therapy services. Our team of doctors, nurses, and therapists have one goal in mind: to return our patients as soon as possible to a home or home-like setting.
Our unit provides 24-hour, seven-day a week physician coverage, and our nurses have specialized training in rehabilitation. Working together with our therapy staff in a true team approach, they focus on helping patients recover from injury, stroke, or other medical problems and recover function or adapt to be able to do old things in new ways.
What is comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation?
First and foremost it is about TEAMWORK. Our doctors, nurses, and therapists work closely together to help our patients get the most out of their stay. But it doesn’t stop there—every staff member, from dietitian to neuropsychologist, social worker to nursing assistant, nurse practitioner to rehab aide, work closely together with the most important team members of all, our patients and their loved ones.
Our goal is to help our patients return to home or a homelike setting. To this end, we utilize every means at our disposal, from the tried-and-true to the high-tech-and-new. We are proud that over 80 percent of our patients achieve this goal.
Our staff members are all dedicated professionals who have a passion for rehabilitation. We come from a variety of backgrounds and professions, but we are united in our goal to achieve excellence together and to keep improving and learning.
The acute Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation and Medicine program at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital serves patients with complex needs who may benefit from intensive therapy levels.
Admission Guidelines
- Medically stable and can tolerate three-four hours of therapy per day.
- Requires moderate to maximum assistance with mobility, language or activities of daily living.
- Requires an interdisciplinary approach of two or more services, including rehabilitation nursing, physical, occupational or speech therapy.
- Has the potential to improve functional abilities and demonstrate new learning.
- Has family participation/support at discharge and a home-going plan.
- Requires 24-hour medical supervision.
This program is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

We love visitors. If you would like a guided tour of our unit (available 8:30-3:30), please don’t hesitate to call. We are just a (free) shuttle ride away from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital! We also offer free garage parking and easy access from Jefferson Street or Elm Avenue.
We recommend entering through the Jefferson Street entrance, next to the Jefferson College of Health Sciences. If taking the shuttle, exit at the Jefferson College stop.
