Welcome to Carilion Clinic! This is an exciting time for our institution. Carilion is in the midst of transformational journey that will take us from a community-based health system to an integrated clinic model where our commitment to clinical excellence and support of graduate medical education is reinforced by ground-breaking research and new and expanding educational programs. As the major healthcare provider in southwest Virginia, we are embarking on a new era of patient-centered care that will provide an incredibly rich learning environment for our students, residents and fellows.

All of our current programs are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with the exception of Neurosurgery, which is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The AOA also provides “dual accreditation” to our Family Medicine and Internal Medicine programs. In addition, Carilion Clinic is actively engaged in the planning and development of a new residency program in Podiatry, as well as a fellowship program in Cardiology.

As part of this transformative process, Carilion Clinic has joined with Virginia Tech to develop a new medical school to be located on the campus of the Carilion Clinic, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTC). In August 2010, VTC enrolled 42 students in its charter class. VTC will employ an innovative problem based learning curriculum (PBL) utilizing adult learning principles and small group interaction. VTC will be supported by four curricular pillars:  clinical science and skills, inter-professionalism, research, and the basic sciences.

We believe that VTC and our developing Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute will enhance Carilion’s ability to explore and contribute to the interface of medicine, science and engineering, while providing our medical students, residents, and fellows ample opportunities to learn, teach and grow within a state-of-the-art science learning climate.

At the end of the day, we recognize that the strength of Carilion Clinic resides in our team. Our superb faculty and staff put countless hours of time and dedication into doing what we do best: the training of highly competent and compassionate physicians with the necessary skills to be key interdisciplinary team members capable of thriving in the most demanding of clinical environments. We have high expectations of our program, our faculty and our staff. We support and hold our residents and fellows to these same high standards and recognize the important contribution you make to the vitality of our programs.
