Improving the health and vitality of communities in western Virginia

Carilion Foundation invests in local programs and organizations that improve the health and vitality of communities in western Virginia.

The foundation dedicates resources to projects that:

  • Demonstrate innovative or replicable models for delivery of primary and preventive healthcare services
  • Improve access to healthcare services
  • Educate and motivate individuals to improve their health
  • Champion non-duplicative and collaborative initiatives to reduce health risks

During fiscal year 2008, the Carilion Foundation dispersed $832,213 in grant funding to 28 organizations. Projects ranged in scope from organizations providing access to basic healthcare to school health programs, dental care, free clinics, senior services, transportation, mental health services and projects that enhanced the vitality of the region.

Since 1997, the Carilion Foundation has provided more than $26.7 million to non-profit organizations, predominantly in the service area of southwest Virginia, and also in support of Commonwealth health improvement for the underserved.

Concept papers are accepted anytime and are reviewed Aug.10 and Feb.10 each year. Proposals are invited and awards are made twice each year, in November and May.

Moving Forward

Carilion Foundation grants will continue to be awarded to programs that show broad community commitment through matching cash and in-kind services. These projects will effectively combine the resources of health and human service organizations, schools, public health departments, the economic and business sectors, local governments and churches. The foundation will support projects that enhance community health and well-being by building collaborative networks, reducing duplication of efforts, and maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of programs to enhance community health and overall quality of life in the region.
