Camp Too Sweet
Carilion Clinic Helps Kids Manage Diabetes at Virginia Camp
Carilion Clinic's Diabetes Management Program provides a summer camp for children and young adults (ages 8-17) who have Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes called Camp Too Sweet. The camp is designed to meet the social, recreational and educational needs of young people with diabetes.
Camp Too Sweet focuses on having fun and helping campers accept their diabetes as a part of their daily living. Through the residential camp, participants learn to interact with others, improve coping skills and challenge themselves.
This year's camp will be held June 18-22, 2012, at Camp Bethel. Camp Bethel is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and adjoins the Jefferson National Forest.
Just 10 miles north of Roanoke, and easily accessible via Interstate-81 and U.S. Route 11, Camp Bethel provides a peaceful sanctuary with 470 acres of hiking trails, ponds, streams, open meadows, forests and rolling hills.
Staffing
The camp is staffed by licensed health professionals and graduates of outdoor recreation programs. The medical team monitors campers' diabetes care 24 hours per day.
