Rotations Available to All Medical Students and Residents

- First- and second-year med students
- Third- and fourth-year UVa and VCOM med students
- All other third- and fourth-year med students and residents
Unfortunately we are no longer able to offer shadow visits to externs (medical school graduates).
Rotations Available to Third- and Fourth-Year Medical Students
The following types of rotations are available to fourth-year medical students. Under no circumstances may students make arrangements with faculty or staff members independently from Carilion’s Visiting Student Affairs Office.
Prerequisites for Applying
- You must be a fourth-year student at the time of rotation.
- You must have completed your school's core rotations and expecially the core rotation in the same area for which you're applying.
- You must be a native-born U.S. citizen, naturalized U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or have entered the United States on a B1 or F1 visa.
- You must be fluent in written and spoken English.
- You must have taken and passed the USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 exam.
- Your school must list us as an affiliated teaching site. Confirm with your school before emailing us. If it does not and is a US school, e-mail us your school’s clinical office contact information. We will notify you when the affiliation is finalized so you may apply. In the event we are unable to finalize an affiliation with your school, you may apply for a three-day shadow visit only (above).
1. Rotations in a Private Practice
Students who meet the above criteria and plan to rotate with a physician in private practice may accompany their preceptor into a Carilion facility but must apply for a private preceptorship. Students from unaffiliated schools may accompany the preceptor to Carilion, but for three days only and to shadow only and must complete the shadow application in the section above.
2. Rotations in a Carilion Practice Office
This section is for medical students who meet the above criteria and want to rotate only at a Carilion practice office. If you need contact information for physicians at our clinics, click the Patient Care tab above, click Clinical Services and then the area of interest or search by physician name. Carefully follow the instructions on the application so we can process it.
3. Electives/Selectives with Residency Faculty
This section is for medical students wanting rotations with our residency faculty at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. We begin accepting applications in January for the upcoming academic year (July – June).
Available Courses & Course Prerequisites
Date Restrictions
- All programs except *Surgery reserve July through January for students interested in applying for that Carilion residency. To determine whether or not you meet a particular program's application criteria, click on Graduate Education & CME. click on the residency page, and then click “Applying” at the top of the left column. *Surgery does not place inherent value in "audition" rotations.
- Rotations are Monday through Friday for 4 consecutive weeks with the exception of Neurosurgery, which can be either 4 weeks or 2 weeks.
- You may not take time off on the scheduled arrival date.
- You may rotate a maximum of 8 weeks.
- Completed applications must be received 45 days prior to the start date.
Time off
From August 1 to February 1 students may take one day for each rotation week for interviews. Some preceptors require students to make up missed time.
Housing
Unfortuantely we are no longer able to offer housing.
Transportation
Students must provide their own transportation while here. Information about the area and free transportation is available at the links on this page.
Process
Follow the directions on the application. Only completed applications are forwarded to preceptors for review. We will email you the results. If we can accommodate you, we will email with information you need to consider before accepting the rotation. You will then have 5 days to accept or decline the rotation. If you accept the rotation, we will email a confirmation. Do not make plans to come until after receiving the confirmation email.
Critical Information
- We do not accept faxed or scanned applications, applications that students mail directly to us, or those missing information or documentation, or applications arriving fewer than 45 days prior to arrival.
- The only immunization record we accept is the Carilion Immunization Record. If you have a health care professional summarize your individual immunization records onto the Carilion Immunization Record before sending it to your school’s clinical office, your application packet will reach us faster.
- Confirm with your school what documentation listed in Section II of the Application the school will send us. Then include the rest of what is listed with your application before sending it to your school.
- Rotations are scheduled on a first-approved, first-served basis.
- Retain a copy of all paperwork for future reference.
Cancelling Rotations
On rare occasions, circumstances necessitate dropping a confirmed rotation, however, students are expected to honor their commitments once rotations are confirmed.
