Two Years of Progress at Carilion Clinic

Roanoke, VA - July 1, 2008

Two years ago, the Board of Directors and leaders of Carilion determined that a new approach was needed to dramatically impact the quality, accessibility and timeliness of care given to patients. Leadership set out to transform the organization into one that focuses on providing the best possible care to each individual. Care can be improved by having physicians in leadership roles, having more physicians available and having a team commitment to coordinating care. Since the birth of Carilion Clinic two years ago, major steps have been taken to move Carilion Clinic closer to its vision.

Carilion Grows to Improve Quality, Available Services

Physician recruitment over the past two years stands out as a clear sign of success in Carilion Clinic’s mission to improve care and meet the need for special medical services in the region. Since the Clinic launch in 2006, Carilion Clinic has recruited more than 150 new doctors, now employing more than 450.

Economic Impact

Over the last year, Carilion Clinic has energized the regional economy with an additional $55,000,000 in employee compensation through 1,000 additional jobs.

  • 2007: 10,400 employees
  • 2008: 11,500 employees

Development of Riverside Center

A 200,000-sq.-ft. outpatient facility is well under construction and a 1,500- space parking garage is nearing completion. Soon, groundbreaking for the new Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine will take place. These facilities join the current riverside one building, which houses Carilion Clinic divisions and private, high-tech businesses.

Room to Work, Room to Grow

In September 2007, a team of doctors, nurses and technicians at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital carefully prepared 73 patients and gently moved them across town to an expanded Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. It was the culmination of a construction and renovation project that created a larger Emergency Department, a new children’s hospital, neonatal intensive care unit and obstetric/gynecology unit.
