Transitional Year Residency
Carilion Clinic has a rich history in graduate medical education. Currently the Office of Graduate Medical Education offers residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, surgery, and the transitional year. Fellowships are available in child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric medicine and geriatric psychiatry. New training programs are currently being developed in emergency medicine and pediatrics and fellowships in pulmonary/critical care, infectious diseases and cardiology will be part of the internal medicine training program starting in July 2009 and 2010. Undergraduate students from the University of Virginia and the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) do clinical rotations at Carilion Clinic.
Carilion Clinic is an integrated hospital-physician network of more than 400 physicians and seven hospitals. Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is the site of all inpatient rotations for the transitional year residents. It is a tertiary referral center for a population of over one million residents of southwestern Virginia. Currently, Carilion Clinic is in the midst of an exciting transformation into a patient-centered, physician-lead, multidisciplinary clinic. As part of this process, Carilion Clinic has partnered with Virginia Tech to form the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Set to welcome its first class in the fall of 2010, the school has a research focus at the core of its academic mission. Not only will this endeavor round out Carilion Clinic’s transformation to a clinic model but will also provide the residency programs with exciting growth opportunities.
The Transitional Year Residency has been in existence for 21 years. Surveys of past graduates and their program directors in subsequent programs have consistently affirmed the excellence of the broad experience that is offered at Carilion. The flexibility of the Transitional Year is usually identified as a particular strength. The Tufts Healthcare Institute (THCI) on-line modules offer residents an excellent, broad based education in two competencies often not well addressed in residency programs. Because the new requirements for the base-year in anesthesiology significantly restrict the flexibility of the base-year, we do not encourage applications from residents going into that specialty.
