Special Programs
Sometimes, based on your diagnosis or medical condition, we may refer you to one of our specialized Home Care programs.
Therapy Services
You can have your physical therapy session right down your hall with our Home Care services.
For many of us, home offers the perfect setting to recover from an illness or injury. That’s why our therapists at Carilion Clinic Home Care come to you.
In the comfort of your home, our physical, occupational and speech therapists guide you through personalized routines designed to help restore movement and strength, and improve speech and language skills. So you can get back on your feet - and back to your life.
Mother and Baby Care
The arrival of a new baby is an exciting experience. Yet, the challenges of caring for a newborn may sometimes seem a little overwhelming. At Carilion Clinic we are committed to ensuring that you feel confident and comfortable caring for your new bundle. After you are discharged from the hospital, our qualified registered nurses can visit with you at home through our Mother and Baby Care Program.
During the visit, our nurse will provide you with instructions about how to care for yourself and your infant and offer suggestions for creating a safe and healthy environment for your baby. In addition they may:
- assist you in assessing your infant
- perform blood tests
- schedule needed follow-up treatments
All services are provided in collaboration with and approval by your physician.
Lymphedema Care
Lymphedema is swelling caused by a buildup of fluid (lymph) in the soft tissues of the limbs. It often occurs after the lymph nodes have been removed surgically or following radiation therapy. It may also be caused by chronic infection, and less commonly is the result of a genetic problem.
Our Lymphedema Care program provides education to help you understand and cope with your specific situation. Our professional staff also assists with and offers hands-on training emphasizing:
- skin care
- drainage
- bandaging
- fittings and donning/doffing of appropriate compression garments
Wound Care
Pressure ulcers, surgical incisions, and skin lesions from accidental injuries are among the types of wounds that may need follow-up at home. Our staff has the experience necessary to conduct thorough vascular assessments and interventions. They are also experts at detecting subtle changes in wounds and managing them to promote healing.
Synagis
RSV, respiratory syncytial virus, is a common infection that causes symptoms similar to the cold in most people. For some infants and young children, however, RSV can be serious. It is the No. 1 cause of hospitalization for children under a year old. RSV can result in severe lower respiratory tract infections and pneumonia.
Those at highest risk for severe RSV include:
- Premature infants
- Infants with chronic lung disease or congenital heart disease
- Young children with neuromuscular disease, immune deficiency or congenital abnormalities of the airways
The Synagis program works to prevent RSV in high risk infants.
Synagis is given an injection, every 28-30 days during RSV season. Home Health nurses assess and monitor your baby’s health in collaboration with your pediatrician while your baby is receiving the treatments.
Partners in Care
When you or a loved one is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, there are many challenges you face along the way. Partners in Care assists families during the entire illness, from diagnosis and treatment to palliative care when it becomes necessary. The program is designed to make sure that you receive the care you need and the support you deserve every step of the way.
Various types of medical therapy may be provided in the home. These services may be recommended following major surgery, after a life-changing illness or as a result of a chronic condition.
