The Carilion Clinic Prenatal Diagnostic Center cares for high-risk maternity patients. Our team of specialized maternity healthcare professionals is dedicated to helping women achieve the best outcomes.
Women are referred to us when their regular obstetrician sees potential issues with the pregnancy. Reasons for referral include:
- Patients over the age of 35 or under the age of 20
- Potential problem revealed during a blood test or ultrasound
- Family history of an inherited disorder
- Personal history of miscarriages or stillbirth
- Pre-pregnancy health issues
- High risk pregnancy
- Medical disorders occurring concurrently with pregnancy
We offer complete prenatal diagnostic services, including:
- Amniocentesis
- Genetic counseling
- Screening for birth defects and genetic disorders
- First trimester screening for Down syndrome and trisomy 18
- Second trimester alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) testing for open spina bifida
- Quad screen analysis
- Fetal ultrasound for the detection of major birth defects
- Fetal echocardiogram for the detection of heart defects
- Percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS)
- Chorionic villous sampling (CVS)
