Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Carilion Clinic features a dedicated pediatric emergency department with a specially-trained team to care for children who are acutely ill or injured.

We see children and teens immediately and prioritize cases according to the level of the emergency. It is the region’s first ED devoted to the care of children in a family-centered environment.

Dr. Melanie Prusakowski, M.D. of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital

Carilion Clinic offers the only Pediatric Emergency Department in Southwest Virginia

You can count on the Carilion Clinic Pediatric ED to provide parents and children with:

  • A clean, safe waiting area, separate from adult patients
  • Private examination and treatment rooms with TVs and rocking chairs
  • Pain and anxiety management with medication and age-appropriate distraction provided by a dedicated pediatric emergency department child-life specialist
  • Equipment designed to fit children of all ages
  • Pediatric sub-specialists

The pediatric ED has 11 patient care rooms and is staffed by board-certified pediatric emergency medicine and board-certified emergency medicine attendings, pediatric competency-validated nursing staff, and a child-life specialist. Residents work side by side with pediatric emergency medicine physicians in a collegial environment. More than 14,000 pediatric patients are seen annually with a 4 percent admission rate.

Two fellowship-trained pediatric emergency medicine faculty lead the team in caring for children. Lisa Uherick, M.D. completed her pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Melanie Prusakowski, M.D. received her training from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Both physicians are passionate clinicians, teachers, and injury prevention specialists.

The pediatric emergency department is located within the Emergency Department at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
