Pediatric Cardiology


Pediatric cardiology is the study of the structure, function and disorders of the hearts of babies, children and adolescents. The pediatric cardiac service at Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital tests and treats patients who are born with or acquire heart problems. We perform over 3,000 pediatric cardiac evaluations in our clinics each year.

Children receive cardiac consultations at Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia for a variety of conditions including:

  • Chest pain
  • Congenital heart defects and disease
  • Cyanosis or blueness
  • Heart murmurs
  • High blood pressure
  • Kawasaki disease, Down Syndrome, Marfan Syndrome, DiGeorge Syndrome
  • Palpitations
  • Patent ductus arteriosus
  • Rheumatic fever
  • Rhythm disturbance
  • Septal defects (holes in the walls of the heart)
  • Syncope (fainting or losing consciousness)
  • Tachycardia

We commonly perform pediatric cardiac procedures and diagnostic tests such as:

  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Fetal echocardiogram (ECHO)
  • Holter monitoring
  • Event recording
  • Pacemaker evaluation
  • Pediatric echocardiogram (ECHO)
  • Stress testing

Our team performs procedures and tests with each patient’s comfort in mind. In addition to well-trained physicians and state-of-the-art technology, our pediatric cardiac clinic offers a child-friendly waiting room and warm, welcoming staff.

While undergoing cardiac procedures such as an echocardiogram in the clinic, children are pleasantly distracted by cartoons and toys in the room. Our staff works hard to ease anxiety.
