Pediatric Behavioral Medicine
Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital provides behavioral medicine services for children with various mental, physical, emotional and behavioral difficulties. These problems can be brought on by many factors, including depression, environmental anxieties or stressful situations.
We further provide assessment and treatment for children with behavioral, learning and psychosocial problems associated with medical disorders such as asthma, cancer, Crohn’s disease and diabetes. We are committing to helping all of our patients — from toddlers through adolescents — improve.
We offer a variety of family-centered approaches to behavioral health therapy.
Behavior Modification
Helping children also means working with parents and caregivers to develop behavior modifications and management strategies. This helps parents more effectively work with children exhibiting behavioral difficulties, including parent-child conflict, noncompliance, social skills problems, attention deficit and school problems.
Inpatient and Outpatient Services
Pediatric assessment and therapy services are also available while the child is in the hospital or visiting outpatient pediatric subspecialty clinics. We provide consultation services to both medical and subspecialty teams, such as gastroenterology, pulmonology, hematology/oncology and cardiology. Assessment services include conducting psychoeducational, behavioral and psychosocial evaluations.
We also provide individual and family therapy.
Our multidisciplinary pediatric psychology program is led by licensed clinical psychologist Tara Mitchell, Ph.D.
Dr. Mitchell provides understanding and care to children who need someone to talk to about their feelings. Treatment allows them to work on developing new behaviors and coping skills that change their outlook. Dr. Mitchell also assists pediatricians in helping them understand psychological factors that may impede patient progress.
