Carilion Clinic’s orthopaedic oncology team specializes in the treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous tumors that occur both in the bone and/or in the bones’ surrounding tissues, including:
- Benign (non-cancerous) bone tumors
- Osteosarcoma bone tumors, usually occurring in adolescents
- Malignant bone tumors
- Osteitis fibrosa
- Soft tissue tumors

Once you have received a diagnosis, our orthopaedic oncology team will work with you closely to put together the best possible plan of action for your particular condition. Our state-of-the-art treatment options include:
- Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the whole-body treatment of cancer with anti-cancer drugs. Its main purpose is to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be used alone or with other cancer treatments. - Radiation therapy
This uses high-energy, penetrating waves or particles such as x-rays, gamma rays, proton rays or neutron rays to destroy cancer cells or keep them from reproducing. - Surgery
Surgery can be used in a variety of ways, including diagnosing your cancer, treating the cancer, or relieving the symptoms it causes. Cancer surgery is sometimes used in conjunction with other treatments like radiation and chemotherapy. - CyberKnife
The cancer center at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is the first in Virginia to offer CyberKnife, a state-of-the-art non-surgical cancer treatment. - Pain management
