Open Curriculum
The Office of Professional Staff Affairs (OPSA) offers stand alone sessions on a variety of topics that may be of interest to physicians as they continue their professional development. Sessions are generally held between 7-9 a.m. We also offer sessions as part of Departmental Grand Rounds.
Physicians of all levels attend the sessions. We have also recently opened the sessions up to residents.
We generally limit class size to 25 to enable discussion to be part of the sessions. It is a relatively new experience for our physicians, from our eight departments, to coming together for shared learning. Thus, offering dialogue with colleagues is an important part of the learning. Working collaboratively with colleagues is vital to provide effective integrated care which is at the heart of Carilion Clinic’s mission.
Topics are identified via regular needs assessment exercises. We also meet regularly with Department Chairs and take feedback from our colleagues seriously.
